What safety distance needed around oil immersed transformer?

Safety clearances surrounding outdoor oil-immersed transformers are formulated based on operating voltage grade, fire prevention, heat dissipation, daily maintenance and public safety, complying with IEC, NEC and domestic electrical codes. Distances are divided into four core categories: maintenance clearance, inter-transformer fire separation, spacing to buildings and public safety buffer zone.
1. Maintenance & ventilation clearance (around transformer body for inspection & heat dissipation)
Measured from the outer edge of transformer tank and radiators:
≤36kV distribution oil transformer: minimum 1.5m on rear & side surfaces; operational front side ≥3.0m for oil sampling, component overhaul and emergency access.
72.5kV ~145kV medium-high voltage unit: all-around basic clearance ≥2.5m.
≥245kV high-voltage main transformer: surrounding reserved space ≥4.0m to avoid air insulation breakdown and facilitate large tool hoisting.
No trees, shrubs or fixed obstacles are allowed within this clearance range to guarantee natural air cooling of radiators.
2. Fire separation distance between two adjacent oil immersed transformers
Fire separation is governed by total insulating oil weight:
Single transformer oil load below 2500kg: minimum spacing ≥3.0m; if space is insufficient, install 1.5m-high fire isolation concrete wall between units.
Oil content over 2500kg: fire separation ≥5.0m per fire protection standard; fire dike bund is mandatory for each independent transformer foundation.
3. Clearance from nearby buildings
Non-combustible concrete/brick buildings: outdoor transformer keeps ≥3.0m horizontal distance; if closer than 3m, building external wall needs firewall construction without windows/openings within upper 3m range of transformer height.
Flammable wood-structured buildings: mandatory safety distance ≥15m to prevent fire spread after transformer oil leakage and ignition.
4. Public safety buffer for residential & pedestrian zones
For pad-mounted transformers alongside roads or residential districts:
Restricted buffer ≥3.0m from pedestrian walking area with warning guardrail installed; fence height ≥1.8m to block accidental human contact with live parts.
Pole-mounted outdoor transformer: bottom of equipment platform ≥2.5m above ground; exposed live components maintain over 3.5m vertical clearance from ground surface.
