What foundation requirement for outdoor oil immersed transformer?

Time:2026-06-05 22:41:03 Author:zhongbei Click:77

Outdoor oil-immersed transformers require standardized concrete foundation design covering bearing capacity, flatness, drainage, oil containment, grounding, gradient, space clearance and anti-seismic configuration to guarantee long-term stable outdoor running.

1. Structural & Load-Bearing Standard

The foundation generally adopts reinforced concrete with strength ≥C20 (3000PSI). Foundation thickness varies by transformer capacity: 30–40cm for 1–5MVA units, 40–50cm for 5–10MVA units, with overall bearing capacity no less than 1.5 times the total filled-oil weight of transformer to avoid uneven foundation settlement under long-term static load. Gravel cushion shall be paved under concrete base to optimize soil stress dispersion; embedded anchor bolts or fixed channel steel are reserved for transformer wheel locking and positioning to prevent sliding under short-circuit impact or seismic shaking.

2. Flatness & Slope Requirement

Foundation top surface flatness tolerance is controlled within ±2mm to avoid transformer tank distortion and internal winding extra stress caused by unbalanced support. For transformers fitted with gas relay, the foundation must reserve 1%~1.5% upward gradient toward gas relay outlet direction, ensuring smooth accumulation of fault gas into the relay for protection action.

3. Outdoor Drainage & Oil Containment (Core Outdoor Standard)

Peripheral enclosed bund pit (oil containment dike) is mandatory for outdoor layout: the effective pit volume shall accommodate full transformer insulating oil capacity to prevent leaked oil flowing outward triggering fire or environmental pollution. Foundation surrounding sets uninterrupted drainage ditch with minimum 1:100 drainage gradient to drain away rainwater rapidly and stop foundation soaking and ground subsidence from ponding water.

4. Grounding & Auxiliary Configuration

Pre-embedded grounding steel bars inside concrete foundation connect to outdoor earthing grid; overall grounding resistance is controlled below 1Ω complying with electrical installation codes for personal and equipment lightning protection. Reserved maintenance clearance around foundation: ≥1.5m below 36kV transformer, ≥2.5m for 72.5~145kV grade, ≥4m for above 245kV, reserving space for daily inspection, oil sampling and equipment overhaul. Seismic-prone regions add neoprene vibration damping pads (≥25mm thickness) between transformer base and concrete foundation to weaken operating vibration and shock load from earthquakes.

5. Site Precondition of Foundation

Foundation construction site must stay away from low-lying flood-prone area, corrosive waste gas and flammable stacking zone; surrounding installs anti-collision guardrail to avoid mechanical damage from passing vehicles.
